Trend-setting Oscar Night for Nicole Kidman

The Oscars (2008) were made even more stunning by presenter Nicole Kidman’s beautiful and original sautoir necklace that ornamented a classic black dress by Balenciaga. These types of necklaces used to be popular in the Edwardian era, but it looked fashionably hot on Oscar night as it draped an assortment of rough and faceted diamonds from the neckline to the top part of the dress. The rope-like L’Wren Scott necklace design was created with 7645 of diamonds. In all, the diamond necklace totaled almost 1400 carats. The necklace was a highlight of the show, as it should be with such a fine handcrafted and beautiful design, and was manufactured by Uni-Designs Ltd.
The necklace certainly upstage all the other bare or boring designs there. L’Wren Scott is a designer of luxury goods as well as diamond jewelry. She used an intricate design with a wide range of cuts and shapes to create a statement piece that was unforgettable. The design was complex enough to take 6200 hours of handiwork. Although this designer has a notable following with red carpet celebrities, this one will probably be remembered as a brilliant addition to her portfolio of designs.
While Nicole Kidman doesn’t need this much diamond wattage to shine star power, the necklace certainly might have upstaged her a bit. It will be interesting to see if sautoir necklaces make a strong comeback or if more people will be interested in using rough, polished diamonds in their jewelry pieces. Movie stars are the glamour and style mavens and their tastes often influence popular culture. However, when the trend starts on the Oscar’s red carpet it makes an even more powerful statement of taste and elegance. You will always find some of the earliest trends showing up in fashion that came out during these special star and diamond studded nights.
