We knew it would end someday. And we knew it would end with epic drama. Perhaps because the year that Samantha Ronson and Lindsay Lohan spent together was the most dramatic, melodramatic, crazy, enabling, tabloid-friendly, screwed up relationship in a while, it had to end. Now Lindsay Lohan is confirming to E! that the party is indeed over. But in Lindsay’s words, “We are taking a brief break so I can focus on myself.” Oh, Lindsay, who are you kidding? It was always about you.

I’m actually surprised at the “reasons” for the split, as various friends and family members dole out their strategic leaks to the press. People in Lohan’s camp are saying that Ronson’s friends and family basically did a Lohan intervention with her, “smearing” Lindsay to Sam. Ronson’s camp is saying… well, they seem to be hinting at the idea that Sam was definitely the dumper, and that Lohan is crazy. Here’s the E! report:

She was shunned from the party and locked out of her love nest. Now, Lindsay Lohan exclusively tells E! News that reports of her breakup with Samantha Ronson are true: “We are taking a brief break so I can focus on myself.”

The decision was made Monday morning following a rather rough weekend. First, the 22-year-old was barred entry from a Ronson family party on Friday. Then a locksmith was seen paying a house call to Ronson’s abode, where Lohan had resided in recent months.

Still, as of Sunday, insiders insisted the pair had not broken up and blamed the latest drama on Ronson’s family members, who were supposedly engaged in a “smear campaign” to convince the DJ that Lohan was “an outcast and a bully, or a wacko.”

The couple’s tempestuous relationship dates back nearly a year (they reportedly celebrated their anniversary in January) and has survived constant rumors of rifts and splits that often proved false.

In fact, just last week, both Lohan and 31-year-old Ronson were refuting the latest round of breakup speculation.

While Lohan is said to be struggling with the breakup and holding out hope the two will get back together, Ronson seems in a better place, writing on her MySpace page that “aura in pleasanton is very pleasant.”

As for what’s next for the newly single Lohan? She is logging time with her family in L.A. and, as she recently told E! News, on the hunt for more acting work.

People Magazine, on the other hand, has a decidedly anti-Lohan vibe. They’re reporting suggests that Sam is getting unconditional support from friends following the split. There’s also this funny quote, from a source close to the couple: “Lindsay is going to try and twist the situation in her favor, but Sam clearly left her, not the other way around.” Yikes:

“Sam’s family has made her swear that it’s really over,” a friend of Lohan and Ronson’s tells PEOPLE. “They are giving her all the support they can to keep her away from Lindsay.”

Adds another source close to Ronson: “Lindsay is going to try and twist the situation in her favor, but Sam clearly left her, not the other way around.”

Meanwhile, Lohan has reportedly written several messages on her private Twitter page alleging Ronson’s infidelity and drug use led to their breakup. In one message, the actress wrote, “You broke my heart. Now go away. I loved you.”

The on-again off-again pair have not been spotted publicly together in recent days, while Lohan has been a fixture on the L.A. scene, stopping into Chateau Marmont with her sister Ali on April 1, and even jumping on stage to sing along with Lily Allen during the British pop star’s concert the following night at the Wiltern.

Over the weekend, Ronson changed the locks on her house, a friend of the pair confirms. “Sam changed the locks on her house,” the source tells PEOPLE. “Lindsay moved her stuff out as much as she could. She’s basically totally out of the house as far as her stuff and she’s not living there anymore.”

Adds the source: “Lindsay was pretty devastated.”

Was it ever about love? Or was it just about the drama, the drugs, the attention? The attention would be my guess. Lindsay’s great love affair is with the media and her own self-perpetuating public drama. Even though I hoped all of this wouldn’t end badly, I didn’t think Sam would have the cajones to just up and change the locks on Lohan. At the end of day, Sam must be a lot less crazy than I suspected.
