In the wake of LeAnn Rimes’ separation from Dean Sheremet, it seems like everything should be coming up roses. She’s now openly able to see her lover Eddie Cibrian, who just split from his wife. She doesn’t have to pretend anymore with Dean – who maybe, possibly, probably beeps on every gaydar, or maybe they just had a really great understanding about other men – for both of them. Even though Dean’s public statement (via Twitter) was a little sad (“Thanks to everyone for all the support through a very difficult time!”), it’s the dawn of a new day for LeAnn. But that’s not the way she sees it. LeAnn was performing at the Deer Valley Music Festival – without her wedding ring – and she gave a loaded introduction to one of her songs:

Performing at the Deer Valley Music Festival in Utah, Rimes spoke to concert goers about the difficulties of being in a relationship.

“You know, I think that you will all really be able to relate to this next song in your lives. You probably know it’s inevitable that in a relationship, sometimes you will have your heart broken at some point,” she said. “Sometimes, you might say that you can’t do anything and sometimes, you want revenge. Sometimes, you say, ‘You’re not worth it.’ But sometimes, you don’t, and that’s when you leave it in God’s hands and know that he will take care of it.”

After reports surfaced that the singer was allegedly having an affair with her Northern Lights costar Eddie Cibrian, a source close to Rimes and Sheremet tells PEOPLE that their relationship may have simply run its course.

“They were so young when they got married, she was 19, he was 21,” the source says. “Maybe they just grew up and they weren’t in the same place anymore. I don’t think that’s unusual considering how young they were when they got married, and the business they’re in.”

Adds a friend of the couple: “They were so close, I believe that however the marriage works out, they will always be the best of friends.”

It’s surprising to me how LeAnn hasn’t taken much of a hit for this. Neither has Eddie Cibrian, for that matter. Every tabloid has some sweet little “I’m praying for them” or “maybe they’ll get back together” quotes from LeAnn and Dean’s unnamed friends. And now LeAnn is alluding to her broken heart and puttin’ things in “God’s hands”. Blech. Why play the goody-goody? I don’t get it.

Why aren’t more of the tabloids really pressing the whole “For goodness sake, an adulterous married man is going to run off with his adulterous married mistress” thing? Maybe Eddie and LeAnn aren’t really going to run off together – obviously, their sexual chemistry is hot enough to keep the affair going, but Eddie comes off as extremely sleazy now. LeAnn does too… so maybe they’re meant for each other.
