Controversial comedian and reality star Kathy Griffin says even she has some boundaries. Though she’s poked fun at Lindsay Lohan in the past, she says that now is not the time to bust on the troubled actress. However, Griffin didn’t hold back when it came to sharing her thoughts on Chris Brown, Rihanna and Diddy.
But some of Griffin’s usual victims can rest easy this time. “I’m more likely to make fun of Lindsay Lohan a year ago,” she says. “She was clubbing every night with the girlfriend and, like, DJing – but now it seems like she’s in the throes of real trouble. It feels like kicking her when she’s down. Believe it or not, I might kind of take her out for the time being. That’s a little hard to find the comedy in.”
“People ask me about Anna Nicole all the time. I made fun of Anna Nicole – I went to her house one time and she was really f***ed up. But when she died, I had people say to me, ‘Are you going to make fun of her tonight?’ No. She died today. The line is always so clear to me. People often say that I have no boundaries, but the line is crystal clear to me.”
The line clearly does not preclude Griffin from treading on her own sacred cows. She’s including a joke about Chris Brown in her opening song-and-dance routine for the ‘A-List Awards,’ despite having passionate opinions on Brown’s alleged beating of his girlfriend Rihanna. “I sing, ‘Chris Brown was on the A-list ’til he kicked around Rihanna. Now he’s doing sex acts with a mule in Tijuana.’ We go right there. First five minutes of the show, honey.”
In truth, Griffin finds the story tragic. “It’s heartbreaking to me that it seems like she doesn’t want to testify against him. I’ve heard one theory that he bought her off, but that doesn’t make sense to me, since she’s so rich. It seems like she’s suffering from classic battered woman syndrome. It breaks my heart that for whatever reason, she can’t say ‘Okay, this is going to suck, but I have to testify and put this guy away’ – and then move on with her career. Because I think she’s going to be fine. I’m sure that the trial would be very difficult for her to go through.”
She adds, “I hear young women on ‘Oprah’ saying things like ‘Well, you shouldn’t piss off your man.’ That’s extremely upsetting to me. That photo of her – knowing the photo was taken that night and obviously she must have looked worse the next day – that fact is indisputable. You have to be hit so hard to get those bruises and lacerations. When Diddy says things like ‘Well, a man should never put his hands on a woman, but a woman should never put her hands on a man,’ don’t act like it’s a fair f***ing fight, Diddy. I really resent when anyone implies that she started it. It’s not a cage match. She’s a girl. Let’s be honest. She can’t physically hurt him – unless she hit him with a knife or a gun, not her fist or her hand or she slapped him – let’s cut the sh**. I feel like this girl [Rihanna] is out there on her own, and more importantly, there are young women taking his side.”
Griffin blames the decline of the woman’s movement for Brown’s vocal female fan base. “I resent when girls talk about ‘burning bras’ – the women’s movement saved lives. The reason Madonna can dress like a whore and Katy Perry can sing about kissing a girl is because women marched and fought. It blows my mind that the whole movement is, as my friend TI would say, dead and gone. I think the only thing that’s going to happen is that [Chris Brown] is going to get away with it and more young women are going to think it’s part of a relationship.”
“I’m appalled at the celebrities that are even on the fence. If there wasn’t a photo of her, then of course you could say ‘We weren’t there, we don’t really know what happened.’ But when Diddy sat there on ‘Ellen’ and had the nerve to say ‘Well, you weren’t in that car?’ I didn’t have to be in the car! Bloody lip.”
Kathy is one of those people you either love or hate. Personally, I think she’s hilarious. I love that she’s not afraid to say exactly what’s on her mind, even at the risk of offending other celebrities and even damaging her own career, like her many clashes with Barbara Walters that got her banned from “The View.” She’s like the snarky fly on the wall who gives us all a glimpse behind the curtain at how messed up famous people are. Let’s face it, some of the things going on in Hollywood deserve to be ridiculed. OK, a LOT of the things. And I don’t think anyone could do a better job of summing up this entire Chris Brown/Rihanna situation. Even if Rihanna did hit Chris – which is simply a myth perpetuated by his defenders – it was never a fair fight. There are no excuses, and trying to make it look like anything other than a bigger, stronger person hurting someone smaller and weaker is appalling. Almost as appalling as him getting away with it.
