In a new interview, Salma Hayek confesses she suffered from diabetes during her pregnancy and that she was hoping for a son – but now she’s loving being a mom to her five-month-old daughter, Valentina Paloma Pinault.

“I feel I was born to have this girl,” she tells the April issue of Glamour magazine.

Pregnancy for the 41-year-old, first-time mom was a humbling experience. “I had diabetes while I was pregnant. I became huge. And I said, ‘This is what it takes for me to have this baby, and I really want it.’ Then you don’t know if it’s going to be healthy; you are completely out of control,” she says. “So the experience really makes you humble.”

Hayek’s businessman fiancé, François Henri Pinault, 45, has two children from a previous marriage, and the actress confesses, “I wanted a boy.”

How come? “Probably because I was afraid,” she tells the magazine. “I think women suffer a bit more than boys, and there is always conflict between mothers and daughters.”

“Now that she’s here, I’m so happy she’s a girl,” Hayek says of Valentina. “And I can’t imagine there ever being conflict between us, because I’m in a state of innocence where I love everything she does.”

She concludes: “I just feel so fortunate to be her mother, and it makes me excited about the rest of my life, because I will get to witness her transformation every day.”

Salma Hayek gave birth Friday to a beautiful baby girl she and fiancé, wealthy businessman Francois-Henri Pinault, named Valentina Paloma Pinault.

“Mother and daughter are doing well,” Salma’s publicist, Cari Ross, told Star in a statement. The 41-year-old beauty had been on bed rest in a LA-area hospital for several days prior to the delivery. “She was so huge and uncomfortable that she couldn’t do anything else besides lie in a hospital bed,” an insider told Star. “That’s why she didn’t attend the Emmy awards last Sunday, even though her show, Ugly Betty, which she produces, was nominated.

It’s Salma’s first child. Francois-Henri, 45 – the CEO of a luxury goods company that owns brands like Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent – already has two children from an earlier marriage.

“Salma couldn’t wait to meet her baby girl,” the insider added. “She already had a beautiful nursery full of gorgeous furniture and toys waiting for the baby. All her family was in town for the big day. She plans on spending a few weeks at home alone with her daughter. Don’t expect to see any baby pictures any time soon! This time in her life is really precious to her.”

Salma – who has never been married – announced her pregnancy in March when she also revealed she was engaged to Francois-Henri.

Salma Hayek at the Foundation CINI Party in Venice, Italy on June 8, 2007.

Bring on the booty! Mom-to-be Salma Hayek, 41, cleaned up at the August 15 baby shower held at her home in the Hollywood Hills.

The nine-months-pregnant Hayek (dad is her fiancé, Francois-Henri Pinault, 45, CEO of luxury goods company PPR) even received doubles of several gifts off her registry at L.A.’s NoMi Boutique. She got Petunia Pickle Bottom Cake bags in both black ($325) and pink ($425), as well as two Bloom high chairs ($400 each) and Graco Snug Ride car seats ($130 each). “She was very excited about everything,” said Pia Lindstrom, who attended the party, where guests – including Hayek’s mother – enjoyed homemade Mexican food.

“She was full of pregnancy glow and looked so happy.”

For Hayek, the baby can’t come fast enough. “Motherhood is not for everyone,” she has said. “It is for me.”

And though Hayek has not yet announced whether she’s expecting a boy or a girl, think pink: A source says gift cards were made out to “Valentina.”
