Entertainment Tonight reports that the FBI and LAPD are looking into credible threats on Kevin Federline’s life.

Multiple sources tell the news outlet that the FBI has made attempts to inform Britney Spears’ ex about a possible contract hit on his life. According to ET, this is the FBI’s standard operating procedure when a person’s life is in danger. When contacted by ET, however, the FBI said they could not confirm or deny any investigation.

Kevin Federline’s rep had no comment, but referred Us to the FBI.

Despite a report earlier today that there is a contract out on Kevin Federline’s life, a spokesperson for the FBI tells Usmagazine.com, “we investigated the threat, but deemed it to not be credible.”

Laura Eimiller, a spokeswoman for FBI Press Relations in the Los Angeles Field Office, explains, “We received information, which was not specific and uncorroborated, and because there was no federal jurisdiction, out of an abundance of caution, we shared the information with local authorities who pursued it further.”

In response to questions about where the initial information came from, she tells Us, “I’m not confirming the nature of the source, and any of the information contained in it. It is not credible. We looked into it.”

Los Angeles Police Department Public Information Officer Norma Eisenman echoes the FBI’s comment, telling Us, “there was an investigation in June, but there wasn’t enough evidence to substantiate the charges.”

While Britney Spears struggled at the Video Music Awards in Las Vegas, her ex-husband Kevin Federline threw a backyard pool party Sunday – for their two sons’ birthdays, PEOPLE has learned.

Personal assistants were seen picking up banners, balloons and an ice cream cake, all in the theme of the animated movie Cars, for Jayden James, who turns 1 on Wednesday, and Sean Preston, who turns two on Friday.

Spears’s parents, Jamie and Lynne, stopped by for the party at Federline’s San Fernando Valley home, joining about 20 guests. They had also visited their grandchildren the day before, while their daughter was hitting the club scene in Vegas before her widely panned VMAs performance.

Spears, 25, and Federline, 29, are embroiled in an increasingly fierce custody battle over their boys. They currently have 50-50 custody, but Federline is seeking more time, serving subpoenas on people in Spears’s inner-circle to show problems in her parenting skills.

Lawyers for Britney Spears and Kevin Federline were back in a Los Angeles court Tuesday, where a judge granted Spears’ request for a continuance. Brit’s lawyer Laura Wasser told reporters outside the courtoom that the next hearing would be held in late November.

Despite reports that the city’s Department of Child and Family Services is investigating allegations of child abuse by Spears, no one from the DCFS was in the courtroom today. When Commissioner Scott M. Gordon asked if they should be expected, Wasser said, “I spoke to [DCFS attorneys] Paul Harris and Doug Hunter, who both said they are not going to pursue anything on this.” Later, she told Usmagazine.com, “I don’t think they [the DCFS] had anything to appear about.”

On Wasser’s explanation of today’s DCFS no-show, Federline attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan told Us at a post-hearing press conference, “I don’t know if that’s true and I don’t know if that’s untrue. I think the best person to talk about that is DCFS.”

Wasser asked the court for a continuance on the case on August 27, citing an insufficient amount of time for discovery. At the time, Kaplan rebutted that it was simply Wasser’s vacation schedule that prevented the case from going forward as planned. He also asked that Spears, being the “monied party,” pay for Federline’s legal costs.

Documents from Monday’s Federline v Spears hearing were released today after both parties agreed on what elements to remove from public record.

At the August 27 hearing, lawyers for Britney Spears asked a judge for a continuance on the former couple’s custody case in order to give both parties more time to “conduct and complete their discovery.” Kevin Federline is seeking primary custody of sons Sean Preston, 23 months, and Jayden James, 11 months.

In her letter to the court, Spears’ attorney Laura Wasser says that Kevin Federline’s lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, had scheduled depositions with the subpoenaed witnesses despite being aware that she would be unable to attend. Additionally, Wasser submitted a letter written to Kaplan on August 15 asking for the offices to cooperate in “the service of third-party subpoenas,” explaining that it would eliminate “the need for either office to chase potential witnesses, which would only cause more unnecessary fees and unwanted media attention to this matter.”

The letter was written after lawyers for Federline had served Alli Sims, Daimon Shippen and Shannon Funk.

In Kaplan’s opposition to Wasser’s request for a continuance, he claims he had already offered a continuance, under certain restrictions, which was rejected by Spears’ team. Kaplan also states that Spears did not attend a scheduled deposition on August 20 because her lawyer was on vacation. Despite requesting that the meeting be rescheduled, Kaplan alleges that he never heard back. He goes on to accuse Wasser of “stonewalling” the discovery with her difficult schedule.

The documents reveal that in addition to the witnesses already served, Federline’s team plans to subpoena Christine Hallet, Spears’ former nanny, and Dr. Betty Wyman, her “designated sober companion.”

Finally, Kaplan requests that Spears cover Federline’s legal expenses, citing her average monthly income of $737,868 dollars, and the imminent end of Federline’s $20,000 dollars a month in spousal support, on November 15, 2007. According to the documents, Federline “has no net income after business expenses.”

A decision on the request for continuance will be made when both parties are next in court, on September 4.

The world’s most famous ex-husband Kevin Federline may have finally gotten his acting career in gear – thank you One Tree Hill – but his once ever-present family is not celebrating with him. OK! has learned exclusively that Kevin’s father and stepmother, Michael and Collette Federline, have just come through bankruptcy and have lost their home in Oceanside, CA.

The couple filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on January 31, listing no available assets. It was discharged on May 7. At the same time, the Federlines stopped paying the mortgage and property taxes on their four bedroom, two bath Oceanside, Calif., home. San Diego County tax records listed the property, Parcel No. 1623901100, as “Defaulted” with $6,094.74 owing.

OK! went to Oceanside in the hopes of speaking with the Federlines but found their home now abandoned with a lock box on the front door and the swimming pool green with algae and infested with mosquitoes. Neighbor Barry Lew tells OK!: “In late June while on my daily walk, I saw a notice on their front door. It was from a bank and said that they’d received no mortgage payments since January 2007 and that they had the right to take back the house in 30 days. They moved out the end of July, during the night I believe.”

Michael and Collette bought the house in June 2004, shortly after Kevin became engaged to Britney Spears. Public records show that they paid $485,000 for the place, with a $393,500 mortgage from Countrywide Home Loans. They refinanced with a different lender on January 13, 2006, taking out a second loan of $97,000, which they used in part to pay to put in the pool.

“They got in way over their heads,” a Federline family friend tells OK! “And I think they hoped Kevin would bail them out. But the days of him splashing thousands of dollars around to entertain his family ended when Britney filed for divorce.”

There’s a new resident coming to Tree Hill, and his name is Kevin Federline.

For his second TV appearance (he got his feet wet in primetime on CBS’ CSI), Federline has traveled to Hill’s North Carolina set to begin filming for his two-episode stint. But, as executive producer Mark Schwahn tells Us, if K-Fed plays his cards right, it could turn into a long-term gig once the show returns mid-season.

Usmagazine.com: How has Kevin performed thus far?
Mark Schwahn: We’re thrilled to have him- he was a great fit for us. This role is tailor made for him. It’s still very early in his acting career and he’s doing really well. Hilarie Burton ran lines with him and Kevin came very prepared. The climate on set has been great.

Us: Given all the media attention Kevin has received, has he surprised you?
MS: I have lived under a rock for five years making the show. I had a cursory knowledge of Kevin – I saw the Super Bowl commercial and knew who he was married to. People know a more bombastic version of him, but he seemed very humble and sweet to me – hardworking and well-intentioned. He’s been pretty fearless in the face of [media scrutiny].

Us: How many episodes has Kevin committed to?
MS: Two, but it’s open-ended. We have along history of being soap-esque and serialized—of having characters go away and then return. It won’t be based on fan reaction. If we have stories to tell for his character and the dates line up, he’ll come back.

Us: What did you think of the attention you got by casting him?
MS: I wasn’t nervous – I was surprised by it. [On the show], we’re comfortable creatively. We have this unprecedented idea of jumping ahead four years [in terms of character development]. We don’t need to invite Kevin in for the promotion or the press. It was about him being a good fit for the character. There was a time on this show when we might have chased that for attention. But we don’t need the attention – we’re not even on the air right now.

Us: Was the role of Jason written for him?
MS: My writers’ room is very pop culture-centric. They started saying ‘Kevin could do this.’ He guest-starred on CSI and [the team] thought he was great. I figured having been a dancer and a musician it would be an easy transition for him.

Us: Will he put his musical talents on display as well?
MS: He has a couple performance scenes on stage. He’s fronting a rock band.

Us: Is he actually singing?
MS: All that is prerecorded. We’re using an underground band, Pilot to Gunner, who agreed to do a couple songs for us. So he’ll be lip-synching. Kevin’s character has to have more swagger and presence than anything else.

The custody battle between Britney Spears and Kevin Federline continues in court today. Attorney Dennis Wasser, father of Spears’ vacationing attorney Laura Wasser, is asking for a continuance on the case, a source tells Usmagazine.com. The next scheduled hearing is currently set for Sept. 4.

A rep for the Los Angeles County Superior Court public information office tells Us: “The hearing was an ex parte hearing – meaning it wasn’t scheduled. It was a closed hearing, and all the proceedings were closed. It happened in chambers, and was closed to the public. The documents received are under seal. There is a pending review for release [of the papers to the public] with the commissioner, but no time factor [for reviewing those.] There is another calendared hearing for September 4.”

While Spears’ lawyers are looking for more time, a source familiar with the case tells Us that Federline’s lawyer “Mark Vincent Kaplan has been working very hard and has been very focused on gaining primary custody of the boys for Kevin.” To that end, he has subpoenaed Spears confidante Alli Sims, former employees Daimon Shippen and Shannon Funk, and an executive adminstrator from Promises Treatment Center, where Spears attended a 28-day substance abuse program earlier this year.

A source tells Us, “Kevin wants to be able to provide a safe and secure environment for his boys.”

Kevin Federline has landed a guest-starring role on the CW’s One Tree Hill.

In the multi-episode arc, the would-be rapper plays Jason, “a cocky, enigmatic frontman” for No Means Yes, a legendary rock band in the show’s fictional setting of Tree Hill, North Carolina, according to the network.

This is the budding actor’s second dramatic role. Last year, he guest-starred on an episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation as a young thug named Cole Tritt.

For the role, Federline donned a pig mask – and was a part of the episode that scored CSI an Emmy nomination for outstanding non-prosthetic makeup this year.

Of course, in 2005, Federline and his then-wife, Britney Spears, appeared on the UPN reality show, Britney & Kevin: Chaotic, which documented the early stages of their relationship.

Meanwhile, Federline’s former flame, Shar Jackson, with whom he has two children, is also doing a guest appearance on a CW show: She plays a young mom on Everybody Hates Chris in an episode this fall.

Britney Spears’s former assistant became the latest person served with a deposition subpoena in the singer’s increasingly high-profile custody case with ex-husband, Kevin Federline.

Shannon Funk was served late Tuesday night at the airport in Long Beach, Calif.

The first to be served was Spears’s childhood friend, Alli Sims, 26, who received her subpoena at 2:30 a.m. on Sunday as she was leaving a private party in the Hollywood Hills, which was also attended by Spears.

Next on the list was the singer’s bodyguard and “manny,” Daimon Shippen, who was served late Monday night as he was getting out of his car in Santa Monica, Calif.

Federline’s lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, is behind the subpoenas, which will be used to compel those close to Spears to discuss her parenting style.

Last week Federline filed for primary physical custody of the couple’s two sons, Sean Preston, 23 months, and Jayden James, 11 months.

Currently, Federline, 29, and Spears, 25, share joint legal and physical custody of the children.

Lawyers for Britney Spears and Kevin Federline were in a Los Angeles family courtroom Tuesday morning, arguing that their ongoing custody case should remain sealed from the public.

An attorney for several media outlets filed an objection to Mark Vincent Kaplan’s request to seal the records relating to his August 8 filing which requested that the court grant Federline primary custody of sons Sean Preston, 23 months, and Jayden James, 11 months. The motion in opposition of the seal states, “if public court business is conducted in private, it becomes impossible to expose corruption, incompetence, inefficiency, prejudice, and favoritism.”

A hearing to evaluate the objections was set for August 14.

Outside the courthouse, Spears’ lawyer Laura Wasser told Usmagazine.com, “The public’s right to know is not outweighed by Federline’s right to keep his kids safe. You have got to wonder why the public interest in this case is so great.”

K-Fed’s attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan, spoke at length about today’s hearing and his client’s aims. About the media’s objection to the sealing of documents, he told the press, “Anytime you have a case with a minor child it is important that the children be protected.”

On the topic of the initial decision to file for more custody, Kaplan explained, “Kevin is convinced that the more time he spends with the kids the more insulated they are from risk.”

And what about the recent subpoenas of Spears’ cousin Alli Sims and former bodyguard Daimon Shippen? Kaplan said, “Kevin is pursuing relevant information from all relevant sources…There will be others [subpoenaed] but I won’t say who.” He added, telling Us, “There is a significant strategy in place that Kevin is going to pursue whatever he needs to do to protect his kids.”
