Britney Spears’ bad week continues. The singer, 25, was charged Friday with one count of hit and run causing property damage and one count of driving without a valid California driver’s license, according to the Los Angeles City Attorney’s office. Each misdemeanor charge, stemming from a fender-bender in a Los Angeles parking lot on August 6, carries a maximum sentence of 6 months in jail.
When asked by Usmagazine.com in what state Spears might have a valid driver’s license, city attorney spokesman Frank Mateljan replied: “Not in California.” Mateljan would not confirm whether Spears even possesses a valid driver’s license in her home state of Louisiana.
“According to DMV records in California, no license has ever been issued to her,” he said.
Spears is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges on October 10.
Earlier Friday afternoon, Spears was spotted fighting back tears as she entered the L.A. building housing the offices of her attorney, Sorrell Trope.
Wearing a sheer lace top, straw hat, and her new preppy-chic glasses, Spears was ushered into the building by a woman as paparazzi swarmed around her.
Trope is Spears’ third lawyer of the week. On Monday, Laura Wasser removed herself from the pop star’s custody case with ex Kevin Federline. Attorney Marci Levine filled in for a short time afterwards, before Spears settled on Trope on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, a Los Angeles judge called Spears a “habitual, frequent” user of controlled substances and alcohol, and ordered that she submit to biweekly random testing for illicit substances.
